Mount Waverley Primary School is in the eastern suburbs with a population of approximately 820 students.
We have a dedicated sustainability specialist and all sustainability classes (weather permitting) are conducted outdoors, whether it be gardening or theory-based learning. PE is also conducted outdoors. In finer weather, classes also take lessons on our decking area under the oak trees. Classes also participate in garden maintenance outdoors.
Outdoor Classroom Day is a day to encourage all teachers to take their classes outside and do their learning in a natural environment. We run our sustainability program with an underlying Forest School theme and wholly support outdoor learning.
Some of the topics and learning exercises we’ve shared with our students include exploring natural textures, scavenger hunts, permaculture gardening and mulching and weeding. We have a multitude of outdoor lessons that we have implemented so far this year.
