OUTDOOR CLASSROOM DAY 2022
What a treat it was to be a PCACS Calista student on Wednesday 3 November!
Every class was involved in Outdoor Classroom Day. This is a global event where intentional learning is set outside the classroom. Pre Kindergarten even had a sneaky peek the day before so they didn’t miss out. Fortunately for WA, we had sensational weather that allowed for Art and RAVE to be outside, as well as Sports and classroom time. It was a hive of activity as staff walked around the campus.
There was drawing, bubbles, water play, potions made in the mud kitchen and café, bikes, scooters, totem tennis, painting, chalk work and a lot of natural maths activities. ‘Can you find me three sticks? Which one is longer? Which one is the shortest?’
When teachers take learning outdoors they report some powerful impacts: Children’s behaviour improves, whole classes are excited to learn, and individuals who feel inhibited by the curriculum often thrive in an outdoor environment.
When adults think back to their own happiest memories of childhood, they frequently recall the joy of playing outdoors. Play is not only central to children’s enjoyment of childhood but teaches critical life skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, and creativity.
How lucky we are to have such wonderful educators!
