Students step out of the classroom, into the outdoors

Australia’s first Outdoor Classroom Day was held last Thursday in a bid to increase the hours students spend outdoors.

The global campaign began in London 2011 and has since grown to 51 countries participating, with Australia enrolling its involvement for the first time this year.

The movement encourages outdoor learning through a range of creative and fun activities designed to harness important skills such as adaptability, resilience, creativity and problem solving specific to learning outside the classroom.

Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School was one of 1300 primary schools nationwide whose students enjoyed these benefits of outdoor learning through specially designed lessons.

Deputy head of primary school Benjamin Duff said students enjoyed being out in the sun for maths lessons and were inspired by their natural surroundings when writing rhyming couplets.

“Students and staff both enjoyed the opportunity to teach and learn in the fresh air and beautiful sunshine.
