Ideas by Nature: A Sustainability Challenge

Introduction

Sustainability is an urgent issue in today’s world, and consuming the next generation with sustainable living methods is super important. “Ideas by Nature” is a sustainability competition that encourages students to think about creative solutions to environmental problems. This project has prompted a mind-set of ‘can do’ with the students in producing creative solutions that have been inspired by nature and ecosystems, therefore enhancing awareness of ecological dynamics as well as sustainability.

Ideas, Naturally Conceived.

Ideas by Nature\ Long read: Is fair trade undemocratic>\ Justrenewal.org\ \ Ideas by Nature, an education-based competition that asks students to come up with a project or solution for environmental problems. Taking cues from nature, students discover new respect and understanding of the complex systems that support life. Today I want to share a little challenge that can encourage critical thinking, creativity and cooperation while also connecting us all to an attitude of environmental responsibility.

Implementing the Sustainability Challenge

Identifying Environmental Issues

Start off speaking about some of the environmental problems in general cases as pollution, climate variation, loss of natural habitats and resources. Encourage students to find a cause that interests them and become experts on that issue.

Exploring Nature’s Solutions

Familiarize children with the idea of biomimicry design solutions that are drawn from natural processes. Talk about how the design of a bird’s wings leads to airplane designs or how termite mounds and air itself have inspired natural cooling systems. Invite students to investigate the way nature solves problems, and how humans can use those solutions to solve our own challenges.

Project Development

Teach the students to design their projects. They can work alone or in teams to brainstorm, research and build prototypes. Urge them to get creative when solving problems and have them imagine ways in which their solutions can offer meaningful change.

Incorporating Technology

Use technology to improve process of developing projects. Students conduct research, design and present everything digitally. Facilitate students to design computer-based models or simulations of their conceptual exercise.

Presentation and Sharing

Hold a demonstration night in which students present their projects to their own grade level, to other classrooms and to the community. That might mean a science fair, open house or vimeo (!). Encourage students to tell us what inspired them, how they came up with their ideas and the potential impacts of those ideas.

Benefits of the Sustainability Challenge

Stream: Creative Problem-Solving Rationale The STREAM rotation allows the student to gather a set of complex problems, study these concepts, and begin to develop creative solutions.

Environmental Awareness: The challenge raises young people’s awareness of how health and life is influenced through ecologic systems and sustainable behavior.

Cooperation and Communication: Children learn to work together and communicate. Project presentation teaches confidence and public speaking skills.

Application: Students use learning from science, technology and social studies to real-world problems.

Empowerment: Students involved in the challenge have the chance to take responsibility for nurturing public awareness of their environment, district, school, and neighborhood.

Incorporating the Challenge into Education

Ideas by Nature integrates across disciplines and can well support a rich curriculum.

Science: Specialize in the study of ecological principles, biomimicry and environmental science. Promote experiments and investigations to help project formation.

Technology and Engineering: Use design thinking and engineering principles to develop innovative solutions. Utilize technology to support research and presentation.

Social Studies: Study the social and economic effects of environmental concerns. Talk about politics, sustainability and world view.

Art and Design: Develop artistic sensibility through designing and storytelling. Leverage art to communicate ideas and visualize solutions.

Challenges and Considerations

As good as the sustainability challenge is you still have to make some tradeoffs.

Access to Resources: Guarantee that students access materials and technology needed. Guidance and support to the process of developing the project.

Differentiation: How will we make accessible the learning of all students so learners can be part of meeting and exceeding the standards or success criteria Challenge: Modify the challenge to meet differing student needs and to support meaningful participation by all students.

Community Engagement: Engage local organizations, professionals and community members to mentor and relate the learning to real life.

Conclusion

Ideas by Nature is, quite simply, changing the way young people think about sustainability. Through this challenge students are acquiring critical life skills for getting along and taking care of the beautiful planet we call home. The program not only enriches academic study, but also gives students the tools to become environmentally conscious stewards.

The solutions can be powerful and generate an invaluable thought process when we collaborate with each other and engage in cutting-edge thinking.” The adoption of the Ideas by Nature Challenge supports a generation toward lifelong environmental stewardship and a greener, sustainable future for all.
